Robb and I are visiting CrossFit Oahu in Honolulu (tough gig, I know) for a CrossFit Nutrition seminar. One of my favorite things about getting to travel to other affiliates to do certs is getting to see the different ideas folks have for layout of their gyms, highlighting client achievements, etc.
Bryant Power and the folks at CrossFit Oahu have a solution for the pain in the ass factor that we experience when updating our record board. At CrossFit NorCal we list the top 5 men and top 5 female times for each of our benchmark workouts. The problem comes when a new individual sets a record. Say you come to our gym and post the 3rd fastest time for Helen. I need to put your time in position 3 and move the person formerly in position 3 to position 4 and the person formerly in position 4 to position 5. When you’re afraid of heights (me) and you’re standing on a ladder juggling a dry erase marker and an eraser and you’re trying to erase times and remember the time you erased to put it one position down it’s a giant CLUSTER!
The Solution: Cut pieces of white board into strips and use double sided velcro tape to affix them to the whiteboard! This way a record can easily be moved from position to position without re-writing everyone’s name and time! BRILLIANT!
Check out these pics of the CrossFit Oahu system:

Oh, and I just loved this new “benchmark”: Birth for time!

This is a great idea. My question is how do you erase a name off of the white board when it has been on for a while. It seems like after 3 or 4 days it takes a lot of elbow grease. Any suggestions? I have 10 dollar white boards from a hardware store, should I use something else?
Hey Brad!
That’s a great question…we do it the good old fashion elbow grease way…and the same 10 dollar white boards. If anyone has any better solutions let’s hear em!
Awesome idea!
We’ll be applying this asap!
Thanks Nicki and CFO – Well done!!
Birth for time is awesome! This place is getting to be a baby factory. Thanks!
That is awesome, thanks for sharing.
We had a mess of a leaderboard at the old gym. At our place now we have a system where each benchmark has a time (one for men, one for women).
If you get below that time (or number of rounds, etc), you get to put your name on the board. You also must put the date you did it on.
As time goes on, your name will get erased as more people get below the benchmark time (unless you re-do the workout more recently). The only performance that stays is the #1 time (aka the gym record).
This solves the erase/re-write problem as well as having people’s names on the board when they haven’t done the workout in a year or have moved away, etc.
For erasing old markings, spray with windex and let it sit for a few minutes. Old marker comes right off. Occationally, you’ll have to use multiple attempts.

Thanks Jeremy! Good Stuff!
Hey Nicki and Robb! It was great to meet you at CFO. I was the grey haired lady who got rocked by Bryant Power’s wicked WOD of jerks and Deadlifts
Mahalo for including my daughter’s Birth for Time record (another of Mr. Power’s ideas) Hope you have enjoyed the gorgeous Hawaiian Islands. Alooooha!
Hi Carloine!
It was great to meet you as well! We are LOVING our time here! I just wish we could stay longer
You might try to re-trace the older writing with a fresh marker and then erase it. I’ve also found that certain brands and colors are worse than others. My RED Expo is much harder to erase than the blue or black. Blue is the best!
BTW- I have a client who is visiting Oahu at the same time. Too bad I didn’t think to look at the Nutrition Certs schedule before she left. She wanted to go when you were here in Portland but missed it!
I love this idea. Thanks Nicki. As far as old marker on the cheap white board, we use simple green and it comes easily.
Jolie mentioned Bryant’s system to me before, but thanks for posting the pics. Now I totally get it. I am on this as soon as I get home…
Cool site nicki. Can’t believe I’ve missed it for so long. Looking forward to checking it daily.
Hey Freddy! It was great hanging with you and Nancy last week! My tan is disappearing already
they also sell a board cleaner at Office Max, right next to the dry erase markers. works well. just spray and wipe.
Great idea and I love it!!
For old markings, try expo marker board cleaner or white board cleaner. Obvious I know, but I use sharpies on my white boards at home, and it takes the sharpie off easily. It also works great for old expo markings my kids accidentally put on our doors…. works much better than windex.
Just came on to the scene and so far I’m enjoying reading all the posts!
As far as erasing our whiteboard we use Mr Clean scrubbing pads (dry). If it’s an old stubborn stain just get the pad damp and erase away. Hope this helps
